Wisdom of Elders Better Than Science or the Internet: “They Still Know How to Cook Mammoth”

Posted by Stephen Leahy in Climate Change and Indigenous Peoples on March 29, 2012

“Our elders are the best source of information. Better than science or the internet,” said Petr Kaurgin, a Chukchi reindeer herder from the remote Turvaurgin nomadic tribal community in north-eastern Siberia.

Kaurgin delivered his message to climate scientists from Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and other Indigenous peoples at the closing of the Climate Change Mitigation with Local Communities and Indigenous peoples workshop here in Cairns, Australia.

“We need to listen to the wisdom of the elders. We can use everything in nature. But we must not break or destroy things, ” he said through a translator.

It was -45C when Kaurgin left his home to bring his people’s message to climate experts here in the hot, wet tropical part of Australia. The IPCC is the world authority on the science of climate change. And along with the United Nations University (UNU) organized the workshop to figure out how to incorporate Indigenous peoples’ traditional knowledge.

“When we love the land where we live only then we are happy,” he said.

This First Edition of the IPCCA Methodological Toolkit for Local Assessments has been developed using a participatory process which enabled learning from practice in the first Local Assessments to be implemented. It is not intended as a prescriptive tool, but rather, as a framework and guide which must be adapted by each team to the local context. As always, this is an ongoing process, and we intend to build upon our initial experiences and learning to enrich the toolkit into a Second Edition. We welcome all feedback and comments!

Download the Toolkit in English (with Annex) and Spanish (with Annex)

Where now for Climate Justice?

CLIMATE: DISASTROUS “DURBAN PACKAGE” ACCELERATES ONSET OF CLIMATE CATASTROPHE

DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA, 13 DECEMBER 2011 – The UN climate talks in Durban were a failure and take the world a significant step back by further undermining an already flawed, inadequate multilateral system that is supposed to address the climate crisis, according to Friends of the Earth International.

Developed countries engaged in a smoke and mirrors trick of delivering rhetoric but no action, failed to commit to urgently needed deep emissions cuts, and even backtracked on past commitments to address the climate crisis, said Friends of the Earth International.

The outcome of the Durban talks, heralded by some as a step forward, in fact amounts to:
• No progress on fair and binding action on reducing emissions
• No progress on urgently needed climate finance
• Increased likelihood of further expansion of false solutions like carbon trading
• The further locking in of economies based on polluting fossil fuels
• The further unravelling of the legally-binding international framework to deliver climate action on the basis of science and equity.

Thirty-six hours after the climate change conferencecountries agreed to a weak agreement that is lacking in ambition, equity and justice. While a second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol has been agreed to, three major polluters Japan, Canada and Russia (and of course the United States) are not participating, the targets are much lower than what science demands, and there are a number of loopholes that essentially negate the targets. Forestry management rules are akin to cooking the books, and dealing with surplus AAUs has been punted to next year. It is not yet clear whether the commitment period is 5 years or 8 years long.
